Website for Derrick

May 12, 2009

The past few months I have been guiding my friend Derrick on the path of web development and design with a joomla based website for his section of scouts. http://ne6b.org. The last few days I have been demanded to learn flash and edit CSS and the HTML of the template on his site.

I have to say after fighting and with Flash CS3 and using many, Many colorful metaphors to get this looking right and to make the flash banner look like derrick wanted it to, its finally done.

Editing te CSS and HTML wasn’t that hard, thanks to the web developer extension in Firefox as well as the Safari 4  beta tools I found what i needed to edit within the template. It seemed easy, I think that’s because the CSS file was “neatly” laid out. Not sure all CSS files look that nice, but what do I know.

Over all I am happy with the way this site has turned out. It still has some content to be posted but the over all look is done (for now).

Next thing…. I need make it easier to update the flash banner so anyone can just upload photos to the server and then it just updates the banners automatically. (Mike clear your schedule …other than moving and the g/f) I’ll have questions with XML

Thanks again for the consult of Mike Graham, he gave me tips for the CSS and HTML as usual. I will be owing him many happy hour beverages by the time I get a degree in Web Development and Design.

The next thing on the list of things to do is teach Derrick how to do this himself so he can learn Flash, editing CSS, and HTML.

One thing to always remember…. BACKUP YOUR TEMPLATE !!!! :-) It will safe your life someday….. but I didn’t tell Derrick that, however Mike knows what I mean he had to fix some mistakes I made with website templates before…..

Fox 43 story on our Habitat project

May 11, 2009

Fox 43 Story on our Habitat project.

mind you, you will see the ladies of our group that day working on the cement blocks out in the front. We all kinda laughed because the reporter wanted to get shots of the women for mothers day. So we all ran away because it would look funny if all of us guys were just sitting watching the ladies do all the work. However its a great story of what we did and what Habitat does.

Mothers Day gift from Apple

May 6, 2009

So I am trying to decide what I want to get my mom for mothers day this year. First I guess I have to tell the back story, My mom has really only come into the 21st century within the last year and a half. She has had hand me down computers and no Internet at home for the last 5 years because she has never needed a computer with Internet. She has been doing what she had to do after hours at her work so no reason to spend money at home for the Internet if she wasn’t going to use it.  It was about two and a half years ago until she finally got the Internet with her old G4 tower that I got cheap and setup for her. It was finally on its last leg a little over a year ago in March 2008. So it was time to upgrade.

Finally she finally broke down and bought an iMac in March 2008. Thank god, she was finally in the 21st century. She had gotten a Nikon D40x digital SLR camera while she still had the G4 tower and it just wouldn’t cut processes the raw pictures from the camera so that was my selling point to her to get a new mac. Never the less, she loves it and its now its a year and two months old and wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Now my dilemma is she loves taking pictures so much I am thinking of getting her an iPod Touch to keep all her pictures on show she can take it with her and show everyone, or i was even thinking of getting her an AppleTv so she can sync or stream her pictures from the iMac to the AppleTv that is connect to her TV in the living room. She would enjoy either and they are both very close in price however, I am thinking she would get more used from the AppleTv for renting and buying TV shows and movies since she is not into going out and renting movies.

I know what all of you are thinking right now, “why didn’t she just get a laptop?” Yea I brought that up, she didn’t want a laptop.

I’m still debating, I am the son that gets her the gadgets or whatever for holidays however, if this is something she will REALLY REALLY wants or will enjoy.

What to do….

May 4, 2009

The past week I have been thinking whether or not I should either continue to work and go to school and finish my Associates degree at HACC or not work at all and take out a student loan and go to school full time finish my associates, and continue and finish my bachelors.

I have been thinking about this the past month or so after leaving Hempfield. I have to say one thing that I have learned over the past 5 years working for the school district I spent 13 years at as a student was how much respect I come to have for education and all my former educators and how much of an influence they all have had on me. If it weren’t for these past 5 years working in the field I most likely would have still been lost and not know what I would want to do when I grew up. Most of you, if not all of you know how much I really didnt like being a student or studying hard at all. That has changed within the last year or so as I have been taking courses in college.

To me its kind of ironic that I wanna have a career in education; integrating technology,  or working in public or community relations in a school whether its in a K-12 public school district or a private or state college.

A new journey has begun for me but I know I have all the support in the world from some of the best educators that I will ever meet in my lifetime.
